Fill the dips. Knock down the bumps. One tool does both.
A stainless steel lawn lute in two plate widths, 77 cm and 92 cm, for spreading top dressing, soil, sand and gravel flat.
A lawn lute is a flat frame on a long handle. You push and pull it over top dressing and it fills the low spots, scrapes the high spots down and leaves the surface level.
Pick the 77 cm plate for smaller lawns and tight corners. Pick the 92 cm plate for bigger lawns, sports turf and open ground, where a wider pass saves time.
Top dressing only fixes a bumpy lawn if it ends up level. Spread with a garden rake it sits in ridges, and the grass grows back uneven in the same places.
The lute's plate does two jobs in one pass. The front and rear bars push extra material off the high spots, and the three inner bars drop it into the hollows. The bars are open on top, so small stones and clods get caught instead of left behind.
Both the plate and the handle are stainless steel, so it can take hard work like spreading gravel and it won't rust when it is left out in the rain.
The handle comes in two pieces and joins with a locking pin. Take it apart and it fits in a shed or a car boot.

A lawn lute is a wide, flat frame on a long handle. You pull and push it over top dressing, sand or soil to spread it evenly and level the surface. Greenkeepers use them on golf greens and bowling greens, and they work just as well on a home lawn.
Which size should I buy, 77 cm or 92 cm?
The 77 cm plate suits smaller lawns, narrow strips and spots near garden beds. The 92 cm plate covers more ground with each pass, so it suits bigger lawns, sports turf and open ground. If your lawn is mostly open space, the 92 cm will save you time.
What is the lute made of?
The plate and the handle are both stainless steel. Some cheaper lutes use a steel head with a painted or aluminium handle. Stainless steel on both parts means it won't rust if it gets wet.
How big is the levelling plate?
The 77 cm option has a 77 x 25 cm plate. The 92 cm option has a 92 x 25 cm plate.
How tall is the lute once it is put together?
About 142 cm for the 77 cm option and about 173 cm for the 92 cm option, measured from the plate to the end of the handle.
How much does it weigh?
The 77 cm lute weighs 3.6 kg and the 92 cm lute weighs 4 kg. That is heavy enough to cut through soil and sand, and light enough to push and pull for a while.
Does it need putting together?
Only the handle. It comes in two pieces that join with a locking pin, and it takes a minute or two. Pull the pin out when you want to store it.
What can I spread with it?
Top dressing mix, sandy loam, washed sand, topsoil, compost and fine gravel. It also works for levelling soil before you lay turf or pavers.
Can I use it on gravel paths and driveways?
Yes. The stainless steel plate is strong enough to spread and level gravel and small pebbles on paths, driveways and under pavers.
How does it level a lawn?
The front and rear bars scrape material off the high spots. The inner bars let it fall into the low spots. Work it back and forth and the dressing ends up level with the grass, rather than in ridges.
Will it damage my grass?
No. The plate rides on top of the grass and works the dressing down into it. Mow first so the grass is short, and keep the dressing thin so the leaf tips still show when you finish.
When is the best time to top dress a lawn in Australia?
When the grass is actively growing, so it grows up through the dressing quickly. For warm season grasses like couch, kikuyu, buffalo and zoysia, that is usually late spring to early autumn. Avoid the coldest months, when growth slows.
Which grass types does it work on?
All of them. It works on couch, kikuyu, buffalo, zoysia, fescue and rye lawns, because the lute spreads the dressing and the grass does the rest.
How thick should the top dressing be?
Keep each layer thin, around 10 mm or less, so the grass can grow back through it. If a hollow is deeper than that, fill it in a few rounds a couple of weeks apart.
How much top dressing do I need?
As a rough guide, a cubic metre of dressing covers about 100 square metres at 10 mm deep. Low spots take more, so measure your worst areas and buy a little extra.
Should I mow before I use the lute?
Yes. Mow a little lower than usual first. Short grass lets the dressing settle in and makes it easier to see when the surface is level.
Should I water after levelling?
Yes. A light watering settles the dressing into the lawn and helps the grass recover. Do it straight after you finish.
Can I use it after aerating?
Yes, that is a good time. Spread sand or dressing after coring and work it with the lute so it falls into the holes.
Do golf courses and sports grounds use lutes like this?
Yes. Greenkeepers and groundskeepers use lutes to work sand into greens, cricket pitches and sports fields. The 92 cm plate suits that kind of open ground.
How do I store it?
Pull out the locking pin and take the handle apart. Hose off any soil or sand and let it dry before you put it away.
How do I clean it?
Rinse it with a hose after use. Stainless steel does not need oiling or painting.
Is there a warranty?
Yes, a 1 year limited warranty. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply as well, and the warranty does not limit them.
How much is delivery?
Delivery is free to any address in Australia. Orders go by DHL Express.
How long does delivery take?
Allow 5 to 7 business days. Remote and rural addresses and public holidays can add a little time.

How to level a lawn with a lawn lute
4 min readLevel Lawn UK
Before you start
Mow the lawn a little lower than usual. Rake out any thatch and dead grass. If the soil is hard, water it the day before so the dressing can settle in.
Choose your dressing. A sandy loam or a ready-made top dressing mix suits most lawns. Washed sand alone suits sports turf and greens.
Step 1: drop the dressing in small piles
Tip small piles of dressing across the area, a little more on the low spots. Small piles are easier to spread than one big heap.
Step 2: spread it with the lute
Hold the lute with the plate flat on the ground. Push it away from you and pull it back, in long, even strokes. The front and rear bars move the dressing off the high spots and the inner bars let it fall into the dips.
Work across the lawn in one direction, then across it again at a right angle. That second pass is what gets the surface truly level.
Step 3: check your depth
When you finish, you should still see the tips of the grass poking through. If the grass is buried, spread the dressing further. Keep each layer to about 10 mm.
Deep hollows need more than one round. Fill them part of the way, let the grass grow through, and add another thin layer a couple of weeks later.
Step 4: water it in
Give the lawn a light watering. It settles the dressing down around the grass and helps it recover. Keep foot traffic off for a few days if you can.
